    the flushing sanctuary

Recently I saw this painting in the bathroom of my hair salon. It was too good to not take a picture. If you can’t read the text it says: “Today the degradation of the inner life is symbolized by the fact that the only place sacred from interruption is the toilet.” I thought the caption was so true. So many of us work hard to care for our homes, friends or kids, our jobs but our inner worlds are in shambles. Even when we catch up on sleep we still feel exhausted because we’re “soul tired.” Have you ever felt this way? Where do you find solitude in the midst…

last day(s) of strive for five!

So, for those of you who took my challenge to “Strive for Five” fruits and vegetables over the month of September, how did it go? I know we still technically have the rest of today & tomorrow, but I’m guessing you’re going to go the distance and eat a few extra carrots 🙂 (you go mr. banana grabber man- get down with your tomato devouring self lady-friend!) What helps you to stay motivated when you’re working towards a goal?  For me it had to do with some stickers…and a little reminder from cookie monster. (if you don’t think you have time to click on this link, just doooo it- trust me it will be a highlight of your day.) I’m all for going green, but this is getting ridiculous

It’s inescapable, going green is what’s hot.  Except that I’ve been green for a long time.  Maybe it had something to do with growing up in the U.P. that I developed an affinity for the lush forests and pine needle strewn ground, but I have always loved the color green. Except lately it’s developed into a problem.  I seem to have too much green in my life. This week I scored this cute green purse for $7 & was really excited about it. But then I got home & I thought, “crap! I have waaaay too much green in my life! I actually tried to talk myself out of buying…

    Labryinth

Earlier this week I spent a few days in a giant old barn that two cool hippies run for people who need some space in life and want to be more present to God. The Hermitage is bordered by two other retreat centers sharing 82 acres of land which means there are is a whole lot of space to walk, pray, listen to birds and see the uncluttered sky.  Spending time there was a little like being unraveled. Even when the daily noise of life was absent, I still had the noise in my own head; song lyrics, to do lists, replays of conversations with people, scenes from movies, worries…
